If you think your child would like to learn to play an instrument, the pages here will give you information, to guide you though the various choices.
Cambridgeshire Music provides lessons in many schools throughout the county, though not all. In schools in which we provide lessons we try to fulfil every request, however this is dependent on available teachers and spaces in school.
To see those schools in which we provide lessons please go here. This page also provides information on how lessons are grouped and the length of lessons.
For guidelines on costs and the choices of instruments please go here.
If Cambridgeshire Music does not provide lessons in your school and your school does not provide opportunities for instrumental tuition then you may be able to have a lesson at one of our Music Academies or wish to consider lessons from private teachers. We have provided some guidance for you about choosing a teacher however the final decision as to the suitability of a private teacher is the responsibility of the parent or carer and our advice here should support your own judgements here.
Cambridgeshire Music also provides musical tuition through the KS2 large group instrumental scheme, which ensures that all children have an opportunity to access instrumental music at some time during their school careers. For more information about this ask your school or visit these pages.
We always recommend that prospective students arrange to have a free trial session first, before committing to tuition. We run regular taster sessions so please contact the office if you want to take advantage of this service. We will fix up a session for you either at a school or at your nearest music centre or the Papworth office – whichever is most convenient for you.
If your child wishes to learn an instrument (perhaps after a taster session) then you will need to register your child for music tuition. The simplest way of doing this is by registering online.
Register here
Depending on the time of year that you are registering your child, it may take some time to confirm the availability of a teacher. From June until September our staff are busy matching up registrations to schools and music teachers. We will give you information when registering as to when you will receive confirmation that lessons are possible.
Instrumental teaching usually begins in the second week of the autumn term for students continuing from last year; the teacher will have posted a timetable in the school stating when they will be in teaching.
If you have registered to go on the waiting list for tuition this year you will have confirmation direct from the Cambridgeshire Music Business Team as soon as the teacher confirms an available lesson slot. This will usually be within the first three weeks of school in September for those who registered before September. Please be aware that for all tuition we guarantee at least 30 visits to the school in the year and your child will not be disadvantaged by a short delay in starting.
