Music Exams

Exams are one way of assessing how your child is progressing with his or her instrument. They provide a challenge and a goal to work towards.

The process of sitting grade exams is managed between the teacher, student and parent. The CM office plays no part in the process.

Grades

Music exams start with grade 1, moving up to grade 8.

Music grades are recognised as the equivalent of a GCSE, AS or A level.

Grades 1,2 and 3 - GCSE G-D
Grades 4 and 5 - GCSE C-A
Grades 6 and 7 - AS level
Grade 8 - A level

When your child is ready to sit a grade exam, the music teacher will discuss this with him or her and you. It is the music teachers who will organise the exam with the examining body, collect payment and let you know the result.

If you want to find out how much it costs to sit an exam and to download an exam syllabus visit these examination body websites.
