Grade - One - A - Thon
Calling all music professionals in Cambridgeshire!
Spinal Injuries Association is delighted to have been chosen as beneficiary of the upcoming challenge Grade - One - A - Thon.
It really is easy to take part - The organisers want you to take a Grade 1 exam on an instrument which you have had absolutely no previous experience.
On Monday 3rd January 2011 you will exchange your teaching skills for one group lesson on an unfamiliar instrument of your choice and, eight weeks later on Sunday 27th February you will undertake a practical exam.
Sponsorship should be easy to obtain from your students, family and friends who will only be too keen to see you struggling on your new instrument. You can also raise money via www.justgiving.com and the event has been registered as an official event to help you easily set up your page - you can also ask members of the public sponsor you!
After the exam itself, there will be an opportunity to show off your newfound skills as you perform in various ensemble pieces under the baton of Russell Keable. The emphasis of the whole process is to put ourselves in the position of our own beginning students, with little to no understanding of the instruments we see before us: so we should avoid choosing instruments from the same families as our first and second instruments. With just one group lesson (there will be several teachers to assist, drawn from among your good selves!) you will, over the following eight weeks, have to rely on rediscovering your learning skills.
Most of us have instruments lying about unplayed at home: these can now be of use! Furthermore, Cambridge Pianoforte Centre have kindly offered their support in obtaining instruments. Obviously we trust those of you who have instruments at home, which you are intending to use in January, not to touch the said instruments until the launch! As you can imagine, organising an event of this magnitude will take several months; hence the closing date is set firmly as the 31st October 2010, after which the committee will hope to focus on timetables and publicity. Numbers may have to be limited, so hurry up – don’t miss this chance!
